The media is bombarded with the mainstream research by big auto and big energy companies into hydrogen as clean automobile fuel. If you research a little more you soon discover alternative technologies out there that also burn hydrogen as automobile fuel. These technologies are not as well known but rather the domain of small, obscure research and development companies and, in some cases, stand alone inventors. The thing that most of these alternative technologies share is that the hydrogen as automobile fuel is generated as it is used, or what many call "on-demand". The fuel comes from a device of some sort that generates hydrogen as it is used doing away with volatile tanks of hydrogen. The fuel for generating the hydrogen is water, good ol' H2O. The energy source for creating hydrogen from plain water is the electricity produced by the motor. You might have noticed that this eliminates the two primary issues of the prevailing R & D. First of all, with hydrogen produced as needed there are no tanks of pressurized hydrogen gas. The only thing you add to an automobile is a system that generates the hydrogen fuel and delivers it to the engine intake system. Second of all, the energy to make energy is inexpensive and non-polluting. It is a system that uses water, which is cheap and plentiful, and electric power, produced by the automobile's electrical system.
