When people talk about education it is amazing how little they really understand. Funding for Education often has a lot to do with property taxes and therefore those folks who have wealth in real estate they are paying more for schools, even if they have no children in them. Of course one might say that you can either pay for schools now or prisons, courts, rehabs and police later. Some say the problems facing education today are caused by the Bush Administration; that is utter non-sense. In fact, President Bush went up to bat for students as they were graduating but could not even read. I know this because as the Founder of a Franchising Company, I was amazed with people who could not read the operations manuals, which I personally wrote at an eighth grade reading level. Obviously, we want people who graduate from High School to read right? Many teachers complain that the No Child Left Behind causes too much teaching in the classroom and Federal Monies come with "Strings Attached" with these Federal Programs, yes they do. What is the point? If the School Districts do not want the money, don't take it. I was once very involved in local municipal politics. Drove me nuts, many of the monies we sought, by the time we solved all the conditions of the strings attached, it was a waste anyway and so we chose not to do the project. In my humble opinion, the Government does nothing very well and most everything less efficient than free markets could do. And if we increase social programs for our aging population, YES, taxes will have to increase. But I propose making our Government 'small enough to drown in the bathtub if we have to because Ronald Reagan was right on his Halloween Scary thought; "we are the government and we are here to help you" Yes, indeed that is a most scary phrase and therefore I stand firm in my observations, experience and opinion on the matter, although no one can disagree with a teacher's comments about over crowding or 30-kids in the classroom dilemma. Education is a huge issue. Like you I have so many thoughts on this issue and hear your comments if you are a teacher. I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought.
